The first battle Louis XIV entered in was to expand France's boundaries. Louis invaded the Spanish Netherlands and won 12 towns. Then in 1672 he personally led his army into the Dutch Netherlands. When this happend the Dutch saved themselve only by flooding their countryside. This war ended with the Treaty of Nijmegen, in which France got several towns an the region of Franche-Comte.

By the end of the 1680's much of europe had banned together to equal the power of France. It all started when Dutch Prince, William of Orange, became king of England in 1689. He joined the League of Augsburg.This groups made up of the emperor of the Austrian Hapsburg, kings of Spain and Sweeden, and leaders of smaller European states. The purpose for this league was match Frances power so that they could not be taken over. Also, bad harvests, high tariffs, and wars were taking its toll on Frances people.
War of the Spanish Succession
In 1700 the king of Spain, Charles II, was dying with no heir; so he promised Louis' grandson, Phillip of Anjou, his throne. When this happend it united two of europes greatest powers. Since most european already disliked France, they felt more threathend by this union.
In 1701 the War of the Spanish Succession began, in which England, Portugal, the Dutch Republic, Austria, and a few German and Italian states came together to prevent this union.
The war lasted for 13 years (1701-1714) and ended with the Treaty of Utrecht.
The Treaty of Utrecht stated that Louis' grandson could remain the king of Spain aslong as France and Spain were no longer united.
The biggest winner in this war was the British. After the war Britain took a fortress that controlled the enterence to the Meditterranian and Spain gave Britain permission to sell slaves in Spains American colonies. Britain was also given the French colonies of Nova Scotia and Newfoundland.
